Walking On Water No Tricks Allowed

We create worlds was Habakkuk’s current stance, however Lauren and Antoinette were more pragmatic, they wanted to reassure themselves that there would be food the rest of days, “how long might the destruction of the current world order last?” Asked a carefree Antoinette to her beloved Habakkuk, but she didn’t pause there, “…might it last longer than our food?”

Habakkuk got a few thousand faces on him, both women were astonished at what they had witnessed, in less than a minute Habakkuk’s face had gone into an event full of contortions, and each portraying a wholly different man, some of sinister countenance, others remarking of a hard life, one of a jester and another of saintliness, another of a man deprived of all outward expression, and the succession of faces continued rapidly until they were all illegible in a blank face, and finally one could again witness Habakkuk. Obviously those words from Antoinette had triggered some vestige of a memory, a recall of his many lives, and again as himself he uttered a bit exhausted, “yes it could last longer than the food.” And with that he went for a walk by himself, thinking, “I don’t have any answers, I am just more aware but no answers.”

Antoinette and Lauren waited just outside the cabin, Lauren noting, “I think we just have to resign ourselves, at least here, when we die we will die quietly the violence wont stir us here.”

Antoinette remained silent after Lauren’s comment but then added, “Habakkuk knows, he knows what is going to happen, he will suffer the violence.”

Lauren bit her lip, “Yes our dear friend feels too much.”

That afternoon the sun was shining moderately, just right one might say, no need for the sun to make a ruckus when all of the world was already taking part in one. The lake had grown serene, a sheet of glass and as smooth, the entire afternoon laid on that lake so that the lake would remember it, the greens ever splendorous, the birds would sing ushering the apocalypse, repeatedly leafs would fall into the water hoping to stir the lake into making waves, it didn’t, breathless it was smooth as glass.

The discussion of the food rations had now been put to rest, there weren’t enough provisions to last a moderate or a fast ending of the world, much less a prolonged and eventful one. Our trio understood this all to well, any discussion was equal only to passing the time and maybe also to keep the memory of language alive, they all went by the shore, and sat there glistening smiles at the amazing. After a while Habakkuk stood up, in front of them, and as if to be a clown said, “It is written that this world will collapse and we are now witnessing it so, it is not a great prediction for all worlds will collapse, endings are always the most certain, always much more difficult to predict what will come hence, how the old will renew itself, however since we are here doing nothing I could predict for you what is coming next.”

Antoinette and Lauren laid on the grass against a fallen tree trunk, they were seemingly content perhaps the happiest they had ever been, perhaps the world ending had taken a big burden off of their shoulders and now they could be free within each others relationship, and with their most adorable and always fascinating Habakkuk. They laughed while waiting to be told of the surging future.

He spread his arms on high and then joined them as if to bless everything around him, “Well very soon we are going to walk on water, and we are going to walk on water because the world is a changing, and the new world makes that easier to do than it has been hitherto.” He looked back at the lake and then towards his friends, and continued.

“You want to know why nothing made any sense in your murder case files? why was the major butchering his city’s people wild? why would people dash and rampage throughout a neighborhood or a school or an office building without just cause? one day they went out and bought guns and ammo and started shooting for seemingly no reason at all, and that is why you Lauren darling, detective, missed the opportunity to solve these cases, as long as the world continued by the old world order everything could be reasoned out, but once an event horizon has been reached to the cusp of the new world order then everything starts going awry; because it can not do anything else, new beginnings are marred by the trashing of the old and a convoluted notion of the new, on with the new then for nothing else will make sense any more or for some time, till the future hardens in our minds, and the roots form from our toes downwards and upwards through each other, it is written.”

Lauren sputtered a hapless argument, “The major had to have gone mad, that is a reasonable cause, that is he was insane, with insanity we can justify what oddly happens in our normal lives.”

Habakkuk was not one to say what he would say next, normally he would want to avoid causing any pain for he didn’t teach through the torch, “Is that why you shot your mother?” Lauren jump up and rushed to pound her fists into Habakkuk, it was mostly a hug action however, she was too confused, and Antoinette joined in trying to subdued her pain. Habakkuk caressed her face while smoothing her tears into her flesh.

“You killed your mother but your mother was already dead Lauren. You shot at a dead person how you didn’t ask yourself that question is where your insanity-reasoning failed you, your mother came back into this world to be shot by you, you were once again her victim, first as her child and now as her killer and why? Ask yourself that but I will answer. Because the unsettling between mother and daughter was so abysmally disturbed that neither could come to terms with the other but your mother always had the upper hand, and still does, but it is why she still does that makes the new world order so fascinating and scary.”

Antoinette and Lauren had again nestled themselves against the tree trunk, Habakkuk knew he had their complete audience.

“Your mother came into this dimension from the metaphysical plain, she entered this dimension with whatever her intrigues to serve herself whatever purpose, and by entering a crime scene, where you were gun fighting defensively against a murderer she then put herself in front of your bullet so that you could feel the guilt that she felt, so that she could turn the cards on you, now you could feel the guilt that you had pinned on her for being a bad mother, now you were your mother’s murderer.”

Lauren reached for her brow in complete comprehension, she understood, she remember blaming her mother for not being there for her little girl Lauren, but she also remember that after the shooting incident, she now carried remorse and had lost any sense of the terrible mother she knew, instead she felt a terrible daughter one that hadn’t been fair to her mama.

Antoinette “But why was Norma able to do that to her daughter?”

Habakkuk didn’t hesitate to give the answer that he had propped up, “Because she was standing outside the concept of time, where she is she can be alive or dead, she can be another person, she can transfigure herself across time environments without worry of causality, she comes into being and wills it so and she can be shot up and know that it doesn’t matter she cannot be killed, her daughter however would surely think she had killed her mother, that outcome must have pleased her.”

Antoinette let off a sort of whispered comment, “Mothers can hold grudges.”

Habakkuk responded to the whisper, “Atonement is a weird thing in the here after, the metaphysical doesn’t have an all divine judge, there are just all these little spirits each trying to atone for their own sense of sin, trying to harvest poorly or not what is within them, and trying to assure one another that there is a common ideal resulting in unintended harm, but the metaphysical is a happenstance event, souls rearrange themselves there in this and that quandary without any obvious justice or sense, in part that is why they have harvested the material, the spirits think things here could be right, or certainly have only one-way; and yet from here we go back to the metaphysical and once there the only guarantee is that we will forgive each other all of our trespasses because there is nothing else to do but forgive, for in so many ways no one is guilty, no one is guilty because things just coalesce to go badly, we are left then only to forgive one another so as to forgive ourselves, and perhaps more as a way of forgiving our universe so that we might not destroy it. Amen.”

In some sense the world ending and all that had made the issues with her mother seem insignificant or outright irrelevant, but now she could tack back towards her childhood mom, and realize how senseless it all was, the emancipation offered by the out-of-this-world explanation as done by Habakkuk made sense, in fact as weird as it sounded to Lauren it was the only way that it could make sense. She asked, “Why aren’t other mothers doing the very same thing to their daughters, why is mine capable of such terrible things?”

Habakkuk was definitely in good form, this was the world that he knew, not the normal world where he could barely meager out a living-wage the paranormal was his realm, the questions perfectly aligned to his mind’s eye and more to his boiling feelings. “Well there is a lot to explain there and we would have to go way back to the very beginning of the age of reason that fermented the advancement of world conditions to a point of systematization and globalization all done under the patronage of science, the only problem was science never encountered its genuine opposite within, religion has good and evil and those are wholly internalized constructs thus they complete the universe of good and evil and compliment it rather well but science never wanted to see its dark side, it never wanted to imagine that it was working for something other than the truth, thus science success as an accepted propellant of the modern world was largely based on a singularized mindedness, never wanting to imagine that its ideals could be misused scientists while looking the other way invented the atomic bomb and completely externalized the blame of its use to extinguish hundreds of thousands as the doings of politicians and military drones; those last being too foolish to reject the blame for their lust for power; but the reality could not be further objectified without extinguishing any semblance of morality.

The world thus, as we know it, begun its own demise with its origins, the age of reason, such was logically bound to never equal whole numbers, the human equation is based on emotion, and so when the material begun to quantify itself, to agglomerate at phenomenal rates, unifying the concepts of, anything through interest, amortization, accrued value and productivity rates this isolated us all from everything and mostly from each other and oddly it unified the world by allowing for a maximum sterilization of selfhood so that it could be globalize and made acceptable to the greatest mass, the homogenization of the artificial world thus allowed a superficial sense of palpable globalization, read unity, the differences between towns and peoples grew less, or at least estimably less, everyone could smile, everyone could shake a hand, everyone could do business with you, everyone ate the same thing and consumed the same pop culture, that alone might well be considered a great accomplishment, it could…”

Lauren interrupted, “We have heard these talk from you before and we love it every time you say it as it does sound grand and truly less boring than most things but how does this allow my mother to bring herself to life and formidably manage to set me up to kill her so as to undo her guilt at being a bad mother by making me a parricide killer.”

Antoinette kissed Lauren on the lips, actually she smooched them, and said, “Yeah Habakkuk what’s up with that!” They smiled at the afternoon that was graciously wilting before them.

Habakkuk sipped some of the cold honeyed tea he had won from a local bear, “Well I suppose you two don’t care about the greater picture, its just that I never get to share it.”

Antoinette injected, “Hum no doubt that must feel bad for you and it doesn’t speak well of us but yes we only care about what effects us now, let humanity worry about what effects humanity Habakkuk we are just a couple of dunces here, and we only care about our mamas for now.” with that in a most unlikely Antoinette manner she got up and raised her hands in the air and danced a sort of Moroccan sway and yelled out to the mighty sky, “We don’t care about the age of reason nor what comes after it!” The birds just ignored her too so as to show they were in agreement.

Lauren brought her back down to her side and our prophet was thus humbled by the reality, the great movements never ever affected anyone personally as much as they personally effected great movements, he continued. “Your mother broke the fiber of reality, to get to your line of sight, to get her self shot up she had to violate the parameters of your reality she did this by become a metaphysical presence in the here and now, she busted into real life, normally the metaphysical and the physical have clear demarcations your mother was able to ignore the border line, and thus she was able to instill her essence in this reality regardless of where it was in time, it didn’t matter if she were dead or alive, she could have herself shot by you hundreds of times if she really wanted to torment you add infinitum, predictably she managed this because this is now more possible, the metaphysical is trying to supplant us in the here and now, more mothers will do this to their daughters and daughters too will do it to their mothers.”

He pauses, clears his throat and continues.

“The fabric of reality has been broken.” …he pauses looking outside of this world… “that’s the real problem the fabric of reality has been broken, we no longer have the privilege of living in a linear world, many things are going to happen that should not happen or have already happened, we are going to live among spirits, and we are going to feel the metaphysical and much dejavu, some of us will be able to see our own souls, others will be able to walk on water, as I shall show you my lovelies.” Lauren attempted to interrupt but the prophet continued. “But the characteristic of the new world order definitely show a bleeding through discrepancy between what is material and physical and what is metaphysical and spiritual, the lines have been blurred we will infringe upon these borders and reality will pay all of the costs, normalcy is now behind us, the age of reason is dead.”

They had both known that Habakkuk was trying to learn how to walk on water, but it was Lauren that called him on it first, “You did it Habakkuk you know how to walk on water, that’s amazing we want to see you common, oh this is thrilling, lets see it.”

“Hold on, hold on I am not done telling you how much everything has changed.”

Antoinette impatiently, “Habakkuk I think that can wait we would rather see you walking on water that will have more to say than you can imagine.”

Habakkuk molested himself to authorize patience, his palms extended like a traffic cop signaling a stop, “Hold on, hold on, I just want one thing to be clear here, we are not going to recognize the new world order, we are from the old world, do you two realize that?”

Antoinette beat Lauren to the words, “Oh fuck it Habakkuk we just want to see you walk on water, fuck the niceties of the new world order and frankly we don’t care if we are excluded, we haven’t even thought that far. Now go walk on the lake or split the water if you cant walk on it, either one of those would impress us a plenty.”

He responded with a voice of “Oh well, ok if I have to,” really he said the following “That’s fine you don’t care about the greater picture of it all, you want me to just come to the end of it all because the ending has always been more satisfying for you all, alright but then I have a prerequisite of my own, you two must both walk on the lake with me, that is the only way that I will do it.”

The girls could not stop from bursting into a hilarious laugh, Lauren expressing the absurdity of it all, “Habakkuk you said it yourself we are contemporary chicks we don’t care, we don’t care about the universe, we don’t care about walking on water, frankly we have never tried, and from what I’ve seen of people walking on hot charcoals I think walking on water would still be a lot harder and I don’t have the concentration nor the urge,…” thinking how silly she sounded trying to convince her friend that she could not walked on water she busted out laughing, “…nor the urge to walk on water Habakkuk oh beloved prophet.”

Antoinette melted calmly into her own comments, “Hey you! how long did it take you to walk on water?”

Habakkuk tilted his head like a dog trying to find the answer that one must always supply to humans, “I think 3 maybe 4 years.”

“…common Habakkuk be real, and now you expect us to instantly walk on water or is it that you want to drown us, are you dead too like my mother and just playing with our heads, where did you go what drugs have you done, we don’t float!” Antoinette, looking at herself or pointing within had put on a few pounds, and she really wasn’t uncomfortable with them she had in fact enjoyed putting them on, it was an act of defiance against the skinny world, it was her way of cushioning Lauren’s tenderness which could be indefatigable. She repeated, “we don’t float I don’t float.” Lauren, skinny Lauren put her hand to her mouth and laughed some more.

Habakkuk however was not one to be undaunted by facts, facts never bothered him and besides he was fully aware of the new world order, this was what made all the differences, Antoinette and Lauren had no way of knowing that for all they knew the entire populace of the planet was starting to float, it wasn’t true of course, but it could be true and that is what Habakkuk always worked on, things that could just be plausible enough, why Antoinette and Lauren were now inseparable soul mates thanks to the impossibility of Habakkuk, anything was possible.

“Well I aint walking if you two aren’t walking, its like this I can go over there and walk on the lake that is not the problem, I have learnt how to do it, I can do it because it is just like riding a bicycle but if you don’t do it with me you will always think I tricked you some how, just maybe I was floating on something, or the lake wasn’t really deep and full of rocks underneath the surface, I played with mirrors, I drugged the honeyed tea, even as you know me and trust me doubt could never be far from you because you are children of the age of reason, you are trained to doubt, you are taught not to believe in yourselves, and by process to doubt me and others and all so that you can be objective; yes any significance here will be lost in this little exercise if I walk onto that lake alone, I insist that you walk with me, I will remind you both what you already know but for yourself doubt.”

Lauren spoke, “Habakkuk I don’t know how to float on water, I don’t even know how buoyancy works, I don’t understand how steel can float, for that matter that planes fly seems rather strange to me, they shouldn’t, I hinder myself voluntarily from how things like motors move things, you tell me that I can walk on water with you, hey I will walk on water with you buddy, if that makes the whole thing more credible, and your arguments to remove doubt make sense to the detective in me, then I will do it, but I am not sure you can shrink 4 years of learning into one pretty holistic afternoon.”

Antoinette uttered, “I am done learning I am not walking on water, at least not this afternoon.”

Habakkuk contented himself, “Lauren since the world has change and is continuing to change the paranormal is becoming a significant aspect of this all and so now it is a lot easier to walk on water than when I was teaching myself, I will teach you, it take me no more than 30 minutes to teach you, if I am right that is all; and if at least you go with me then it will be worthy, at least you will be a witness to it, it is always better to do things in twos.”

The sun was not far from setting, when it starts to take that final plunge over a lake or over an ocean the sun rushes into the horizon, in ten minutes time a sunset is done, immemorially each time, you can repeat the view hundreds of times, wait for the green flash, look for the double sun, scram for your emotions, rush to your soul, figure a long pause in existence, there are no two sunsets, the sun was starting to set. The lake continued calmly, little breeze affronted the ambience, to breath air the lungs had to try for there was no pressure on them for an uptake.

Antoinette laid with Loki by the tree while Habakkuk practiced with Lauren the art of walking on water. He would say things like…” Here swoosh your toes in the cosmic essence, don’t think that there is nature here, it is a field of energy, your toes can feel the energy, they must feel the energy, tickle it, let it tickle you, it will feel a resistance, stir it, swirl it.” It took some time maybe twenty minutes or so but finally Lauren acknowledged that there was a force that her toes were moving, a force that wasn’t visible that wasn’t air, a force that interacted with her toes apparently largely from her sense of belief, she succeeded in creating whirlpools in this field, from any angle, upside down, perpendicular to the ground, even with her hands she was able to stir it and feels its resistance against her trimming gesticulations, till clearly her palms were fielded and so were her feet beneath, all fielded by this invisible energy field.

Loki and Antoinette stared at those two fools but more they sort of fell sleep, by this point Lauren had already constructed the energy like surfing zone underneath her feet, her tows kept on wringling it into existence from the nether-ether, Habakkuk noted, “Lauren you can walk on water not because you can walk on water, you can walk on water now because you can walk on the air so now you must learn to walk on the air, you are levitating, the world doesn’t touch you, the material world cannot burn you, it cannot wet you, you are a floating orchid, your lightness can only drift, direction is unknown to you, the world floats, you float, your drifting and matter cannot grab a hold of you.”

Lauren, the detective, was holding Habakkuk’s arm, surely the judges, Loki and Antoinette wouldn’t hold that against them, when she started at the edge of the lake and commenced to walk on water, occasionally splashing Habakkuk, he did his part to splash her too, thus they would both end up wet but not through immersion, the only thing that was going under was the sunset, they walked and frolicked against the backdrop of the setting sun, walking towards the sunset, laughing towards the horizon, smacking water droplets that could not drown them, the whole world had changed, the whole world had indeed change.

Back on shore Loki looked rather unamused, nothing had change for Loki, he didn’t even know that there was a new world order, or that the world was ending and frankly he didn’t want to know for he too was from the old world order, and then there was Antoinette, watching her lover Lauren walk on water, watching her best friend Habakkuk play on top of a bottomless lake as if it were a solid countertop, she marveled at the whole thing, she felt their joy, particularly she felt Lauren’s joy, it moistly smacked at her lips, she herself did not need to walk on water.

The sun did set on their world.
